Home Grooming Your Toy Poodle

I started grooming my own poodles after I adopted my first show quality girl, Macarena. She had long, flowing hair and needed some special care with her hair. Unfortunately no groomers in my area knew what to do with so much hair, so I had to learn it all myself. It was a little intimidating at first but after a while I started enjoying the time I was able to spend with Pakito (my pet) and Macarena. I also enjoyed being able to select what products to use on them since quality is really important to me. My dogs really started to enjoy the time together too, since they already trusted me and could relax on the grooming table to the point of taking naps while I did my thing. LOL.

Over the years I do not think it's an exaggeration to say that I've saved thousands of dollars on grooming fees. It is so hard to find a good groomer, and the good ones are booked up sometimes weeks in advance. Depending on where you live, the grooming fee averages anywhere between $45 - $75, plus a tip. Besides that, you don't know how your pooch is *really* being treated, or if the products they are using are toxic or not.

If you decide to learn how to groom yourself, just remember that your Toy Poodle will be very forgiving. He / she will be thrilled with all that attention and with having your hands on him / her for so long. Also, if you mess it up - it will grow out again, don't worry. You get to try it again in a couple of months since their hair grows about 1/2 inch per month.

A good starting place is to watch a basic grooming video on YouTube such as this one. YouTube has videos on everything you could possibly want to learn about grooming a Toy Poodle. After you've watched a couple of videos, go shopping for some products... I have included some of my favorite products in this page. If you have any quick questions, drop me a note or call me and I may be able to help you! ;-)
